David, Josef, and Michael Hofer

These men are important, I believe, because they defended the faith under severe and cruel treatment.  They had come to America, where they believed they would be safe to practice their religion.  However, when war broke out, they too were expected to serve in the military.  At that time there were no allowances for Conscientious Objectors.  David, Josef and Michael were imprisoned at Alcatraz prison.  Conditions were brutal, as well they were severly tortured, in attempts to convince them to relent and serve in the military.  They did not.

Josef and Michael died from the abuse.  Michael survived.
